Welcome to My World.
My name is Claire L. Fishback. You may have previously known me as Brouhard, but I got married and am so enamored with my new last name, and new husband, that I decided I would pursue my writing career as a Fishback.
I live in Morrison, Colorado with my hell hound, Belle, and my husband, Tim. We bought our house in 2009 and got married about a month later, but as of Halloween 2009, we have been together for 3 years. He is the most wonderful person in the world... so supportive of my dreams and goals, he keeps me grounded in reality and I keep him on his toes and show him alternate perspectives to situations. With my creativity and imagination, I have this ability to make things up. I call it theorizing, Hubby calls it lying, though I never do it to get ahead and I never keep anything from my husband.
I have a BS in Psychology that I earned in 2009. Getting a degree was a huge step in my life because when I graduated from High School I didn't want to go to college. Then I went to Art School, dropped out twice, went to the University of Alaska South East when i lived in Juneau, and finally made my way to Colorado, got a job with a great company who paid for my tuition. I figured if it was essentially free, I might as well. I really don't plan on doing anything with my degree, but I did learn a lot about the human condition, something that is very important in writing dark fiction.

Why Dark Fiction?
I don't call my work Horror because it is a lot deeper than a simple emotion. To be honest, I'm not sure why I chose dark fiction, but I do know that I personally love to be scared and my life is all lollypops and sunshine dust, so why not go in the opposite direction with my writing?
I have been writing dark fiction since I was about 7 or 8. Back then they were modelled after the scary stories books that had black, white, and red covers and frightening illustrations. One of my favorite stories from one of those books was called "Harold." That one still scares me when I read it.
Writing dark fiction, or horror, whatever you want to call it, gives me a sense of power. If I can write something that gives someone nightmares, or makes them think about it long after because it was so chilling, or even move them in any way, I feel like I have changed them in some way. To me, having the ability to change someone, even if it is so minimal that no one knows about it, is a powerful thing.

Non-Writing Interests
(This picture was taken just after my husband and I participated in an event for the Lung Cancer Association in which we ran up 56 flights of stairs in Denver, CO)
Aside from writing, I am an avid reader. I love to read. I love reading horror and dark fiction and the occassional mystery. I also love to eat ice cream close to bedtime so I'll have nightmares. I like running because it gives me time to be alone with my own thoughts. Sometimes I get great ideas while I'm running because I zone out, hypnotized by my own breathing and the pounding of my feet on the pavement. I love to play with my dog the way that dogs play. I do the play bow to her, I growl at her, we wrestle and have a great time.
Best of all, I love being married. I love being a wife, and some day I'll be a mother, but until then, I have Belle to mother and fuss over.
We watch a lot of movies, too. I always add obscure scary movies to our queue online. I enjoy thrillers and ghost movies. Slasher films I can do without, but if the gore is there for a reason, not just for the sake of gross-factor, I like it.
I hope you enjoy my website! Please leave me a note to let me know what you think!
